Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Ubuntu 10.04 release named Lucid Lynx is the next release..

Well 10 second boot time is the main aim of this release it seems . I felt the high speed booting of my 9.10 karmic now from older hardy heron( 65 seconds to 25 seconds ) . still lucid aims at 10 seconds boo time as the main aim to achieve  . This release seems to be released at next year 2010 .

The 10 second boot time is acheived by equal partitoin of modules at start up  with:

i) loading the kernel and initramfs should take two seconds,

ii) driver loading, filesystem mounting, and other “plumbing” should take two seconds,

iii) launching Xorg should take two seconds

iv)  the remaining four seconds should be used to launch the desktop environment and other services that are part of the user’s session.

( if you are not well verse in this terms then please open your eyes after 10 seconds from start of booting  )

The computer should be fully booted and ready to use at the end of ten seconds

but as a sad part GIMP is removed from standard installation of ubuntu  when queried  developers say  :

• the general user doesn’t use it
• its user-interface is too complex
• it’s an application for professionals
• desktop users just want to edit photos and they can do that in F-Spot
• it’s a photoshop replacement and photoshop isn’t included by default in Windows…
• it takes up room on the disc

Im realy sad about this plot and really the fifth point  “it’s a photoshop replacement and photoshop isn’t included by default in Windows…”    . comparing a linux distro with a windows .

If they speak so then linux must be a simple skeleton with a sucky media player and a paint program as some others do.

well even it ‘s sad ,  I guess it doesnt takes more than a couple of minutes to trigger sudo apt-get install gimp

Make your own OS

Make your Operating System of your choice with five simple steps ( for linux geeks only ) :

Step 1: Download and install Reconstructor

Downloads click here

and run sudo dpkg -i reconstructor_2.8.1_by_hacktolive.org.deb

Step 2: Meta–>System Tools –> Recontructor

Now open the package reconstructor from system tools and enter your root password  . Click Next .

Step 3: Choose alternate cd option
on available options choose alternate cd to make a installable bootable OS  , or live cd fr live session of the cd

Step 4:  setting up the base

Now choose the working directory  and swap space to work up . Locate the iso image of your ubuntu CD or enter Ubuntu CD into cd rom

Step 5:adding up your own packages

Now you can add new packages or delete the unwamnted ones  and choose wallpapers , thems , the appln to boot on start up , the one you dont need with simple interface

and finally create disk will create your fresh piece of distro

You can have a try of remaster sys or  if you are really a linux geek try to do from scratch try the lengthy  step as in Linux  wiki  with squashfs tools

Now you can burn this iso image and distribute among your circle and call this as your   NEW DEVELOPED OS  as people say 

Is New Orkut Really New ?

Well few days Back I heard something called new orkut . It took weeks before since last time I logged in  Orkut . Facebook attracted me more and some how addicted to it .Now heard about “New Orkut “ I came back to my old orkut .

 

Goodness I got invite from some one ( sad thing is New Orkut too is a Invite and use system ). Well when I saw try new orkut at top , Clicked it really expecting a amazing wonder as an Alice . But I seen a page something very similar to face-book which disappointed me a lot .

 

What they say new in this version are …

 

i) They say ‘ Friends updates are available to every one ‘ .. Do you guess this thing new as an FB user 

 

ii) second ‘Every one can comment on any friends notification , updates ,application and friend acceptance ‘ .

 

iii) A new thing I found interesting is Video chatting integrated with orkut ( pity on Linux users , it says ‘ OS not supported ‘)

 

iv) Best feature I found in this release is IE 6 is not at all supported .

 

v) Next humorous thing I found is adding a general sucky template  and five sticky colors  of their own  choice and  they said  ” Pick your favorite colors We’ve made orkut even more colorful “  ..

 

vi) Speed is the main thing they mentioned they have increased .. But instead of static pages I can see my page still buffering in status bar  ( stealing my pity small free  download limit I have )

 

vii) And the highlight of all is they mentioned moving chat bar from left side to right side as a new feature ( I guess the only thing they didnt imitate is the notification bar you can see under  as In face Book )

 

 

I guess it may take time to  digest this things and to switch over to new orkut .  The thing I like the most is the prefix Beta in Orkut  ( a word which can answer almost  all the bugs  user raises   )

Using windows NT Boot Loader with Linux

Is your Box factory manufactured with windows and cant use Linux Grub or LILO ?

Do you wanna taste the difference booting your Linux system through a windows boot loader ?

Follow Five simple steps To make it working :

Step i) Copy your grub.bin file to windows

Open your terminal and run dd if=/dev/sdaN of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1 where N denotes your Linux installed medium

 

Step ii) Copy the grub.bin file to c:\

Well now boot into windows and copy grub.bin file to your windows primary medium (you can use flash medium to take grub.bin from linux )

 

step iii) working out in boot.ini

now set all previleges to boot.ini file by running attrib -r -w -s c:\boot.ini on windows

 

step iV) add the linux entry to it

Open the boot.ini file and add a line c:\grub.bin=”XPUD ” denoting XP with Ubuntu Desktop , Name is  of your choice

 

Step v) save and restart

Now save all the changes and restart now you will see the windows NT loader showing two entires windows and Linux

 

 

Switch between any of choices as you wish

 

note i: If you got any fatal errors during the switch over try replacing grub by a rescue disk

note ii: if you choose not to place MBR with GRUB during linux installation then  you have no choice to load your Linux from hard disk ( for advanced users ) then you can use live CD and run above commands for Linux to fix it up

If you are ready to loose the power of grub and want something experimenting and new I recommend this

Orkut Scrap made me mad Before

well this morning I received a flash embedded scrap from my friend and I’m really afraid and searched for web cam’s all around and even tried after disconnecting from net what a shit worked too

I tried it as many times as possible , this happened unless my browser crashed and till I'm satisfied that it's not a trial and error

I thought in different angle as I can , whether they trace thro' webcam , with my angle of inclination of head ,etc etc,.

Then I really thought how stupid I'm when i keenly watched the application for several times .

well guess you tried it before and now what makes a application less than 100 kb to guess what your mind reads

A simple logic now keenly watch all the logos in multiples of 9 ..( Thats what you are going to get )

and try now you got the thing ( if you didn't know its logic so far ) and see how many pale faces are still waiting to be cheated

Google Chrome Os – Rush Time

As for Google mentioned :

” Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at net-books. Later this year we will open-source its code, and net books running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve. “

But the major leaks I found is every file you store move or even trash happens to be in remote server .

It is similar to saying even your personal credential files will be exposed to them and your only allocated necessary privileges to access the files . I dono how far it is gonna be secure .

Persons with limited network bandwidth will be harder to use because each operation is a complicated network oriented .

Third even if I have huge hard disk say several TB’s we are forced to access file from/to network which adds on burden for traditional off-line users .

As they mentioned Chrome OS as LIGHT WEIGHT BROWSER BASED OS they doesn’t seem to match with high end gaming as well as with advanced hardware and software support . They seem to simplify more as only single processor is utilized even you have multi-core’s.( Under utilization of available resource as far as I learnt )

Guess this is a better matched OS for atom based processors and x86 series.

well this time Im expecting a real worthy OS from Google ( rather years ago I got a distro named GOS which is nothing rather than a new Themed Ubuntu )

Grub or Lilo ? what are they ?

well before stating about GRUB and LILO let me briefly say what are they :

They are Boot loaders .. Exactly they are piece of code which places your operating system from secondary hard disk to RAM when you switch on your PC . Thats why we say ‘ My PC didn’t boot ‘ instead saying like Iron box or TV doesnt switch ‘on’ .

well any how this doesn’t be much seen by naive users and mostly hidden Then why care about those thing ?

even seems like its hidden it has many consequence on multiple OS environment . If you used Linux past three years before then you will be more familiar about grub error 17 stage 1.5 error ( once we annoyed at this strange one and thought even hardware is totally gone useless )

I know speaking about grub and LILO is a most unresolvable one like we already have

As far as Linux geeks grub is emerging technology with efforts to replace LILO and easify users with problems stuck on MBR

Is Google Go gonna take a go?

Well Google is a is an American public corporation, earning revenue from advertising related to its Internet search, e-mail, online mapping, office productivity, social networking, and video sharing services as well as selling advertising-free versions of the same technologies. Google has also developed an open source web browser and a mobile operating system.

Recently I heard about something like a Browser called chrome and Latest Wave ( every one fights for it ) and another project recently put on my ears is Google go .

Whats it exactly ?

well name doesn’t reveal any of its identity about the product ( similar to every open source softwares does ) is a new language gonna be developed by Google team nearly 5 years of hard work from now .

Google’s Go could improve on existing programming languages by simplifying development without sacrificing application performance, but it will likely take years for Go to attain an established position that will allow it to have a noticeable impact.

If its a productive and cleaner language well other than few years of dumping its library and making its syntax familiar , its a less burden thing for me

But this guys sucked at chromium ( Linux edition of chrome ) with loads and loads of fatal errors and shooting bugs .

Linux lags in Gaming ?

Well why Linux lags in gaming than windows , is a question nagging in most of Linux minds …

As apart saying , geeks don’t play games or games are meant for lazy windows user or use Wine instead doesn’t seems like a satisfactory answer

Well why is it so , does Linux doesn’t have the necessary modules or its a OS for who doesnt know what is entertainment and games actually mean

Before , what makes windows run all the top most games is a hardware abstraction layer called DirectX 3D Linux have better one called OpenGL

I too had a watch of rare Linux games that are standard like open arena ,tremulous and some more first person shooter game

Because I can only see games like Tux ( grand old Mario ) , chess , mines and so small packed games (x<1 MB)

Is it mean people using a OS say X can only afford such a huge amount for mere gaming entertainment ?

Is this a Politics of Microsoft or no work teams of Linux wanna take the risk of developing ?
